Be Safe and Smart While Grilling This Summer


Grilling is a pleasure in life that comes along with some safety precautions. Along side those precautions are ‘rules’ or suggestions on the perfect way to cook your favorite foods. There is a mental checklist that comes along with grilling so that everyone is able to enjoy the activity. Learning how to cook the perfect cut on a grill is a skill many wish they had. It takes time and practice, but the results in the end are mouth watering.  

Propane Grill Safety Tips

Start with a hot grill. When you place meat on the grill, it should sizzle. Searing meat locks in the juices and flavor and helps keep meat from sticking to the grill. Turn the grill on as high as possible, then place the meat on the grate, close the lid, and sear one side for 3 to 4 minutes. Then, reduce heat to medium for the remainder of the cooking time.

Most grilling is done with direct heat, or cooking items quickly at high temperatures. Place burgers, steaks, or your favorite tender beef cut directly over the grill burners. Use indirect heat when cooking less tender cuts of beef, such as brisket. The indirect low-and-slow method cooks meat at a lower temperature for a longer time. Simply turn off one set of burners and place beef on that side; radiant heat from the hot side will cook items slowly.

Keep your beef from drying out. First, don’t flip the meat more than a few times — just once, if possible. Turning meat too often makes it lose its natural juices, leaving it flavorless and dry. Second, always use tongs or a spatula — not a fork — to turn meat. Piercing the meat allows its flavorful juices to escape.

Most experts say cooking a steak to medium rare ensures the best flavor and tenderness. Cook to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for rare; 145 degrees for medium rare; 160 degrees for medium; and 170 degrees for well done. Ground beef and burgers should always be cooked to 160 degrees. Use an instant-read meat thermometer to ensure perfect results.

Turn off the burner control and close the cylinder valve. When a grill is not in use for extended periods of time, cover disconnected hose-end fittings with plastic bags or protective caps to keep them clean.

Properly transport and store gas cylinders. When refilling or replacing a propane cylinder, transport in a secure, upright (vertical) position in a well-ventilated area in your vehicle, and take it home immediately. Always use or store cylinders in a secure and upright position outdoors (not in a garage or shed).

10 Tips for Safe Summer Barbecues

Knowing how to keep your home and family safe during grilling season is very important. Whether you use Colorado propane, or you live across the country, make sure you know the appropriate dos and donts of grilling to keep it safe and fun! 
Do:

1. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. Farther is even better. This includes portions attached to your house like carports, garages and porches. Grills should not be used underneath wooden overhangs either, as the fire could flare up into the structure above. This applies to both charcoal and gas grills.

2. Clean your grill regularly. If you allow grease and fat to build up on your grill, they provide more fuel for a fire. Grease is a major source of flare ups.

3. Check for gas leaks. You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that’s a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough.

4. Keep decorations away from your grill. Decorations like hanging baskets, pillows and umbrellas look pretty AND provide fuel for a fire. To make matters worse, today’s decor is mostly made of artificial fibers that burn fast and hot, making this tip even more important.

5. Keep a spray bottle of water handy. That way, if you have a minor flare-up you can spray it with the water to instantly calm it. The bonus of this tip is that water won’t harm your food, so dinner won’t be ruined!

6. Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT. If you are unsure how to use the extinguisher, don’t waste time fiddling with it before calling 911. Firefighters say many fire deaths occur when people try to fight a fire themselves instead of calling for expert help and letting the fire department do its job.

Don’t:

7. Turn on the gas while your grill lid is closed. NEVER do this. It causes gas to build up inside your grill, and when you do light it and open it, a fireball can explode in your face. Click here to see our demonstration.

8. Leave a grill unattended. Fires double in size every minute. Plan ahead so that all of your other food prep chores are done and you can focus on grilling.

9. Overload your grill with food. This applies especially fatty meats. The basic reason for this tip is that if too much fat drips on the flames at once, it can cause a large flare-up that could light nearby things on fire.

10. Use a grill indoors. People often think it will be safe to use a grill, especially a small one, indoors. NOT TRUE. In addition to the fire hazard, grills release carbon monoxide, the deadly colorless, odorless gas. That gas needs to vent in fresh air or it can kill you, your family and pets.

Skunk found in Brighton just tested positive for rabies


Skunk found in Brighton just tested positive for rabies

As a Colorado propane company, we want to ensure that all of our customers as well as employees are safe, especially when animals like these are roaming around. 

The Weld County Health Department on Thursday confirmed a skunk captured in Brighton was infected with the rabies virus.

The skunk, captured May 19 on an elderly couple’s property in Brighton, was seen walking in circles and may have been blind, according to a Brighton Police Department news release.

The Weld County Health Department determined the skunk needed to be tested for rabies, and those results came Thursday.

The skunk is one of 42 animals that have tested positive for rabies in Colorado this year, and many of those have been in Weld, according to the release.

Officials recommend residents keep their pets up to date on rabies vaccinations.

“The rabies virus is deadly to our beloved pets and can also be transmitted to people with tragic results,” according to the release.

Officials further recommend contacting animal control and keeping safe distance if residents see unusual behavior with animals.
